06/08/2005: "Mystery Classmates (Part 4)"
Dear Bloggers: This has been great fun. We're now embarking on the final stage of mystery classmates. The Great Class of '65 40th Reunion is 14-days away. We've touched on 143 mystery classmates, which I think is amazing. And, we couldn't have done it without your input. Now, it's time for the ultimate contribution.
I'm going to list the final 55 classmates by number. I want everybody to dig deep in their memory and come up with something on each one of these classmates. I don't want to leave anybody out. These final 55 classmates are no less important than the first 143. Unfortunately, I didn't know any of these classmates very well. Rather than throw out some generic hints with no substance, I'd rather solicit my stable of bloggers to my aid. In your response I'd like you to identify the classmate by number and name...give a few anecdotes about what you know about them. YOU get to be the blog meister for a change. You know what I'm after...where they lived, cousins, schools, husbands and wives--any contact you may have had with any of them. We were a class of many. It took all of us to make this class. These final 55 classmates will complete this odyssey. You lurkers out there need to help, too. We've had a handful of 'regulars' and without them we'd never be this far.
This is an Open Book test. Remember, refer to these mystery classmates, in your responses, by name and number so we can refer to them and enjoy your input. When this is all over I'll tie it all together here on the web site and also in the 'memory booklet'. Also, I'd appreciate it if you made some comments to everyone's input. Finally, keep up the wonderful dialogue we've already started--this is half the fun. Your interaction, so far, is what's made this a success. Keep it going---or, I'll swipe your bicycle and sink it in Capitol Lake right along side Sally Trish's, Tee Pee your house, short-sheet your bed at the Ramkota, put Karo Syrup in your shampoo bottle, a potato in your exhaust pipe, anagesic balm in your jock strap, pay for a billboard on Sioux Avenue that says, "for a good time call______ " and list your home phone number, send your email addresses to hundreds of spammers, have pizza's delivered to your house when you get home, and what ever else I can figure out in the next three weeks. The Get Connected Team can now participate, too. Up until now, they've been relatively dormant because I've shared the answers with them before you guessed them.
So get with it! We need your participation on this final phase. Jerry, Sally, Penne, Nancy, lurkers, Warren, Gaylord, Dennis, Jan, Cathleen, Colleen, Helen and all the rest of you friends who've been so gracious as to participate--I need you one more time! **Editor's note: Keep it clean and positive--or I'll edit you! Ok, children, we're going to have a field trip this week. We're going to Pierre for the Class of '65 40th Class Reunion.
Just so you know, as Cathleen has been quoted, "well keep the web site going after the reunion until the last classmate turns out the light.
Classmates are getting packed and loading their vehicles, or grabbing their Internet boarding passes. Several are pulling out of their home bases on Monday and Tuesday.
This is what we've been waiting for. See you all on Friday. blog guy

from the "this is really bad" dept. someone who shall remain nameless e-mailed me wondering if I recalled that OLD kids game called-button, button, who's got the button...they wanted to play it with their grandkids and couldn't remember it....sad thing is, I still do.

how about the "dutch rub", or the "rasberry", or last but not least, how about the blast to the top of the leg, the "frog", loved'em each and every one...most were guaranteed to leave the prettiest green bruise.

Let's not get mushy here, Dennis and Jerry. Hey, 'long time--no see', will suffice. I hope I don't have to start hugging guys. Actually, we're from the class of 1965. Girl hugging for the guys is cool. Guy hugging for the guys is going to earn you an unsolcited ration--if you catch my drift. Actually, if you really remember, a salutation from two guys in the early 60's was a glancing slug on the upper arm muscle and it hurt like hell!

Got a letter from Jean Grubbs Hoeppner today. She's been married to Karl for 40 years. There's the record as far as I know. She's worked at the First National Bank for 38+. When asked when she was going to retire her comment is, "When I am ready".
Also got an email from George James. He'll be at the festivities on Friday and Saturday.
Build it and they will come!

Cathleen:
thanks for the info, however the size of the brain and it's relation to gender might not have been a wise choice. I'm not going to say a word but I'll bet you it doesn't go unnoticed. I didn't realize Alice was still with us. I loved her class,
**Editor's Note: Cathleen, I told you the 'brain' deal and the reference to gender wouldn't go un-noticed. You're on your own now. It's out of Mr. Blog's control. Gaylord's a gentleman...but, there's people on this site who will take you to task.
Gaylord Sonnenschein said @ 06/16/2005 12:56 PM CST
Gaylord, Well,I'm pretty sure it was the brain... it had two tiny lobes. The left one was bigger so we figured it was a female frog. Mrs. Smith gave us an A in dissecting. Paul, does Alice still live in Hill City? She was our N. Monroe neighbor. She lived on one end of the block and the Rounds family lived on the other.
**Editor's Note: Cathleen, you are digging a hole you aren't going to be able to climb out of. ha ha I expect Gentleman Gaylord isn't even going to be able to ignore this one.
Duce said @ 06/16/2005 11:45 AM CST
You guys make me laugh, I can't even remember dissecting a frog. Probably didn't trust me. I remember getting burned quite badly by some HCL acid in chemistry, however no brain surgery. Cathleen are you sure it was the brain you got. Paul I can't believe you were even contemplating doing ANHYTHING to Mr.Robinson, if caught Sally's rath would have been a pleasure at that point. good story.
Editor's Note: I accidentally launched a burning tongue depressor in Chemistry and it landed on Karen Sampson's shoulder, dangerously close to her bee-hive hair do. Sam Ruzik was on me like stink on a feedlot...Karen was flipping out...I was surprised as hell since the whole scene wasn't premeditated..truly an accident. Sam the Man didn't understand. This was shortly after I challenged him on the 'rock' deal with my own geological assay of the rock from the Corps of Engineers geology lab in Omaha. Years later I saw Sam on Main Street, in Spearfish. He told me his whole intention at Riggs was to get more science people to go to the School of Mines, in RC. He figured he'd directed more students to those disciplines than any other science teacher in the state. I silently wandered what he had against all us liberal arts people.
We had the Jack Robinson caper planned to a 'T'. We also knew it was suicide if we failed or got caught. But, it was the last caper of our high school careers and we were willing to take the risk. Mr. Parlet's change in schedule might have actually saved our lives.
Gaylord Sonnenschein said @ 06/16/2005 11:22 AM CST
Speaking of 'tiny brains' you folks continue to amaze me with your recall. I did see Phyllis Keith at Chicadilly's a few years ago. She was our server and remembered me, as well. Chicadilly's is what we used to call the Truck Stop Cafe. We should all go over there and sing her a song.
I have a pretty good long-term memory BUT remembering that someone pushed their glasses up on their nose with the palm of their hand is beyond my expertise, Jer.
Duce, it's suspect that you remember things like disecting frogs and getting their 'tiny brain' extracted, in tact. Monte Michaelson has been assigned the dutes of Class Chaplin and I might suggest you speak with him about this frog thing before we all get together on Friday. Ed Colleran has had a career is social services and he might be able to lend a hand in this effort, as well. There are twelve step programs for this sort of thing. We'll all help you through it. "Hi, My names Cathleen, and I'm a frog disecter" "Hi, Cathleen!"
Alice Smith was also an art teacher. Biology was her forte', though. She lives in Hill City and is quite active in the RC Journal letters to the editor game. Quite an activist, Alice. I've commented to her editorials on occasion since I think she roams far beyond 'left' field. She probably hasn't associated me with Riggs...but as soon as she knows it was our 'group' who freed her garter snake from captivity she'll probably take Sally Trish's place and have me gunned down, at high noon, on the corner of Capitol and Main. The 'snake' caper was a clandestine, nocturnal mission..as was Sally Trish's bicycle hit. We had made plans to 'catch and release' the bass in Mr. Robinson's fish tank but didn't quite get the job done. We knew the janitor's (Mr. Parlet)cleaning route and everything. We planned to nab the fish and transport it to an undisclosed stock dam close to where we released Alice Smith's garter snake. Sally's bike found a home in Davy Jone's locker, aka, Capitol Lake. The night of the caper, Jack Robinson's door was locked..Parlet had changed his routine..and the caper was foiled. Probably the best for us. Sally and Alice were easy marks. Smilin' Jack didn't take prisoners and had a tendancy to burn the field when he was done searching. Everyone survived, though, except Jeannie and Cathleen's frog! Sally got her bike back and Alice's snake lived a long and happy life. I think Jack's bass seccumbed to a more slow passing--something to do with Ruzik's rotten egg gas.

Can't help you guys too much, your memories are too good for me. I did notice Bill Gordon's namd and his wife Pat. Yes they still live in Pierre, Pat works at medical associates and Bill works at Dept of Trans,. They are avid golfers so I see them on a regular basis whenever I get a chance to go to the course. They had a son David, that played baseball and basketball with Dave L. oldest son. Good athlete, was a good friend of my sons.

Phyllis Keith-ran into Phyl on another of my notorious fishing trips. She was doing the nasty tempered waitress trick, but after she recognized me, she warmed right up,same old Phyllis. It's my guess that she's still there in Pierre. She didn't give any indication of wanting to relocate. Always quick with a smile and in a hurry with an arm-load of books to get somewhere. Maybe she hurried just because I was there.hmmmmm

Jeanie Dewitt - She was my lab partner in Mrs. Smith's sophomore biolgoy class. Very smart and funny. We were able to remove our frog's tiny brain fully intact...I think we were the only ones to do that. If my memory serves me, I believe her brother was married to a professional cheerleader in the early 60s. Don't know what team, but I had never heard of such a profession and was very impressed.
I've probably given the Blogmeister and Esteemed Jer enough amunition now to keep them posting comments for another day or so.

I've been working with Patty Kifer all afternoon trying to gain her access to the web site. A few weeks back we were getting a tremendous amount of spam messages and I 'went behind the curtain' and banned their IP's from our site. Somehow, Patty's got caught in one of the banned brackets and we haven't been able to figure out how to re-instate her. Hopefully, we have it figured out. But, if not, all you guys need to know that Patty has been desperately trying to contribute to the web site and the mystery classmate blog. She hasn't been missing in action. So, as a show of force for all her great intentions maybe all of us should send Patty our love VIA email. I'm sure she'd appreciate hearing from all 196 of us. patl@dakotabeverage.com That's Pat 'L' at dakota....da.da.da,,sometimes the 'l' looks like a 1 (one) catch my drift? patl@dakotabeverage.com She's outside the fort, right now, trying to get in and I'm having difficulty reversing the ban. blogest of the blogs

Terry Ree, of Williams and Ree, pretty well known duo in the entertainment industry. I see Terry occasionally and chat "old times" with him. Don't think he knows me from Adam's left ox, but he does remember Pierre. He does remember my pop tho. The old man had him working out the dam one summer. The kid was just beginning his career in entertainment. Understandably, Terry had a little trouble maintaining enough energy for both jobs. The old man told him that he'd best be making up his mind what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. Don't know, but I'm thinkin Terry did okay.

Ronald Bliss and Jeanie Flathers were in our confirmation class at the Methodist Church in about 1962? - remember those days? - I think about 1/3 of the Class of '65 were in that confirmation class - I'll see if I can find the picture & send it. Ronnie had a sister, Jan Bliss, who was about 4 years ahead of us, a cheerleader and Homecoming Royalty; Jeanie Flathers' sister, Pat, was married to Bill Gordon, brother of Sandy Gordon - maybe Bill & Pat sill live in Pierre? Some of this should ring a BIG bell with Warren Huber.
**Editor's note: You heard her Warren...dig deep! I'm trying to get Pati Kifer back on the blog site. If any of you have been wandering, her URL got caught in a bracket I deleted to get rid of spammers. She's been trying for a few weeks to get on and harrangue us but hasn't been able. I think we got it fixed. If not, you should know, Pati Kifer is desperately been attempting to contribute and she's been blocked from the site. Later on, the Dairy Queen was under the auspices of a grandma and grandpa that lived out by Farm Island...I'm talking the early 70's. They had identical triplets who ran the Dairy Queen, and their last name was Cornish. I think we called them the Cornish hens. Regadless, red-heads and all wild women. I went out with one, maybe two or all three, of them. Sometimes you didn't know which one you were with. And I think they used the triplet anonymity to their advantage. I won't go any further with this because this is a 'family' site...but would be willing to carry on the conversation at a later date if anyone wants to hear a real funny.

Okay I have a correction, I really keep up good on things. Tommy Hickman has moved back to Texas. I just got off of the phone with Shirley (Hickman) Halligan and she gave me Suzannes e-mail address. It is subuch@aol.com Shirley said Suzanne would be in Calif. during the reunion so she will obviously not be here but Paul you may want to connect with her by e-mail so she can enjoy this great web-cite
Editor's Note: I sent an email to Suzanne and invited her to the web site and also asked her to post a comment. Lyle Mc Caughey just called me and said he still plans to be in Pierre and is sending his registration money. They just acquired a 2 yr-old foster child and there's a chance travel might not be possible. If so, Lyle said to spend his money on anything we desired...that should be fun. Here's a round, on Lyle.

Yes Tommy Hickman still lives out north of hayes and operates a very large ranch. I know him and will try and get in touch with him. I thought rollie Jaeger lived in Pierre, but I have not been able to locate him so I think he no longer lives here. I had a good telephone conversation with Roger Lonbaken today, He said he would stop by either Fri. or Sat. He told me Miss Trish passed away about 7 or 8 years ago. She taught at Lincoln High in school for several years after leaving Pierre. So Paul you are safe on that one. I don't think she will be gunning you down unless she sends a messenger down. He also told me Mel Herr passed away about 4or 5 years ago. He was teaching at the University in Verm. His wife still lives there I guess. As I remember she was the cheerleader advisor. He said they had a son that was gay and died of aids a few years ago and it seemed to take its toll on Mel. Sad. Roger has a son David that is a Podiatrist at the Medical associates clinic here in Pierre.
**Editor's Note: Good work Gaylord. I emailed Suzanne and invited her into the web site. Sorry to hear about Sally T. Her and I weren't best friends but that was all in jest and youth. At least now I know I won't get whacked by some hired gun. I didn't know Mel Herr very well, althugh I might have had him for a class. They wouldn't let us wrestlers anywhere around you B-Ball players...something to do with character damage. ha Roger Lonboken was a pretty cool dude. Sort of a student's type of administrator. I remember when we came back from the very first wrestling meet that Pierre was ever in--out here in the Black Hills--where we all got pinned the first night and all of us but one got nailed the second night, Roger made an appearance at the Monday wrestling practice and all he could do was grin that big toothy grin and say, "It will only get better!" We looked like the walking dead..arms in slings, crutches. It did get better, in the next year or two Vince Olson was state champ and Pierre was on it's way to a great wrestling program. Lindekugles kid was a state champ a few years back.

Here's the list of people we haven't been able to 'touch'. I'd like just a comment or two on any memories you might have on these people. I remember Dave Hall. Didn't Jean Dewitt hang out with Ron Bliss. Was Lenora Fratzke related to someone in law enforcement? Carol Frost (Ree)..that's not Terry Ree's wife is it? I think Lyssa can give us some info on the Huckfeldt's. Didn't the Urquhart's have some sort of business in Pierre? Ken Long--any relation to Renee? I thought Jean Grubbs was at the initial Pierre planning committee meeting--and didn't she marry Karl Hoepner? I need some help here and we're running out of time. Here's the one's we need to touch.
David Hall, Dan Miles, Gloria Bauman, Lenora Fratzke, Carol Frost, Jean Grubbs, Bonnie Stock, Kathy and Pat Huckfeldt, Linda Iverson, Rollie Jaeger, Phyllis Keith, Karen Kinsella, Linda Larson, Ken Long, Ron Mills, Patricia Murphy, Ruth Ravera, Carol Sheffer, Sherrie Urquhart, Jean DeWitt, and Barbara Ugland. Miss Trish taught in the Sioux Falls school system. She has gone to "greener pastures". Paul, they didn't know you at the Harley store in Sturgis, what's the deal? I am still coming to the reunion in casual dress so you guys can wear your moo moo's. Oh almost forget Carol McIlravy is in Pierre, have the Pierre group look for her Carol Van Roekel.
Editor's Note: Sally, what do you mean Sally T. has gone to greener pastures...is she with the big logarithm's in the sky...or, she's just retired? If she's history then I'll quit railing her.
The Harley store in Sturgis is just a satellite outlet...parts, and motor clothes. I don't have anything to do with that store. I'm at the main store, in Rapid City....and you probably drove right past us. I-90 and Exit 55.
**You didn't fall for the formal gown deal, huh? I'm liking the moo moo idea. Dennis won't admit it but he's into moo moo's, too. That's a lot of 'o's' for three words. Possible Scrabble coup?

ahhh- Duke Lamster--probably one of the best"old time" game wardens SD ever had. He had kids in the Pierre school system. That guy almost made it enjoyable getting pinched for hunting jackrabbits at night. If you could keep a straight face while he was trying to chew you out, he'd usually let you off with just a royal reaming. Grin and you might as well start digging out your wallet. Meet him on the street, he'd call you by your first name, ask about your family, the man knew everybody, and never make mention of your real or imagined transgressions.
Editor's Note: I have to agree with Jerry...this guy was an exceptional public servant...touched most all of us at one time or another.

Gaylord, When you talk with Mr. Lonbaken, please ask him about Miss Trish. If she is still with us, I think we should get Paul and her together for a reconciliation/mediation session. He needs to fess up on a few misadventures that I'm sure have plagued her throughout her life. You may know about some of them.
Editor's Note: OK, I'll cut Sally some slack. It's been a long time. Let bygones be bygones. I harangued that lady for three years straight. She was a tough cookie. We had her on the edge a couple of times...like the time Fuzzy Palmer played the stripper music on his drums when she walked across the stage during graduation rehearsal. I'll fess up if she shows up at the reunion, but I'm telling you--she'll gun me down in the street if she sees me, Gordy or Ronnie. ha ha

OK, Dennis--no moo moo's. It looks like Warren has a line on Mark Vanderpol, and as I understand it he will be attending. Gary Fleishacker has surfaced and says he'll be there, too. Gaylord is going to razz Lonboken..says he lives off the #10 green. Gaylord should be familiar with his yard since that's where most of his balls end up...that or the creek. Also Gaylord has been on the Hallagan/Hickman deal with no luck, so far. I'll email Lyssa tonight and see if we can get action on both of the Huckfelts. I ran into Kathy a few months back, in RC. If Lyssa can connect with Patty we should be able to get a lead on Kathy, who is still in Rapid City.
**Keep on the final few classmates we haven't been able to connect with. Good work by everybody. Time is getting short. Roger Lonbaken lives in Pierre and actually lives in a house located just off of the #10 gree on the golf course, saw him mowing his yard last Wednesday. Regarding #170 Pat Huckfeldt. Paul check with Lyssa S., believe she said she ran into her in Colorado Springs, and talked about having lunch. Maybe she knows something about her. Never heard if they had lunch or not.
Dress code sounds great to me.
Editor's Note: Sally, I work at the Rapid City Black Hills Harley Davidson shop. We own Sturgis, too, you won't find me up there. I emailed Lyssa tonight and asked her to help us out with Pat and Kathy Huckfeldt.

Editor's note: Gaylord's burning out on the Hickman deal...he says he's dialing his fingers off. What ever happened to touch tone phones. Does anybody else have an angle on the Hickman clan. If I don't hear something pretty soon from some of the Pierre people I'm going to start in with the pranks. Gaylord's the only one picking up the slack out of Pierre. Re: Gary Fleishacker - his parents still live on Capitol Ave. - I think - last time I knew anything about Gary was he lived in Minneapolis - someone could call his parents - JC Fleishacker. and I would pay $$$ to see Mitchell in a moo-moo.

TWO WEEKS LEFT. I got a nice note today from Marcia Schumacher and she lent a little info on Walter Shueth and Loretta Campbell, so I'm taking them off the UNTOUCHED list. She stayed in touch with Walter while he attended a business college in Aberdeen and later when he was in the Army..always thought he would be managing a large chain of movie theaters. That's right, Walter and the Englehaupt girls were State Theater and Sioux Drive-in stallwarts.
Marie says she recalls Loretta Campbell moving to Pierre in our senior year and that her dad pastored a small church. She joined Marie and Jane to a few jaunts to the Drive In.
ALSO, we finally got an email from Tom Fargen. He'll be at the banquet on Saturday night.

Hush money could be good depending on how bad the story is and I trust Penne, she probably has a better memory than I do. By the way my oldest daughter is married to Sam Anderson who is a professional fisherman on the PWT. He and his dad both fish that circuit and do quite well. They have both won tournaments and believe me they made a lot more than I do playing golf. They also own a trucking company in Minneapolis called Bay and Bay Transfer. Rich Taylor used to drive for them. Funny isn't it my daughter marries a fisherman and I haven't even caught a walleye in my life. I have gotten Sam out on the golf course with me though.

Just got in from an absolutely beautiful day on the water. After a somewhat shakey start (forgot to put in drain plug)this was one of the better ones. You want to have your COOL honed to razors edge before you back in, start to unload, pull back out, climb out of your boat and screw in the plug. Now remember that you're doing this in line with a whole bunch of other"professional" boaters, that just like you, they would NEVER do something so stupid. We made it,no harm, no foul. The "Carp Lady" was giving fishing lessons again. Don't know how much longer I'll be able to stand this constant humiliation, maybe see if I can find her a parttime job. Should go back to fishing with Lindekugel, at least he'd let me win one once in a while. "Carp Lady" sez that I'm a poor loser and even a worse winner. Suzanne Hickmans sister lives in fort Pierre, she is married to Frank Halligan and they have a big spread south of town. they live a 1/2 block away from the river just down stream from the bridges. If you need an address or e-mail I can call her sister and get it if you do not have anything.
**Editor's Note: Gaylord, we need an email address....then we can harrangue her into coming to the reunion. I think Jan has her snail mail address, but could you get that just the same. It all helps. Frank Halligan was a weight class above me in wrestling. I had to wrestle 'Smoky Wallman' three times a year. Smoke was a 4-time state champ and a two-time Div. 1 Champ, at Iowa. When I was a senior I'd had enough and went up a weight class and wrestled Frank for the varisity spot at 145....figuring I could dodge the Wallman bullet for my last debut against him. (Wallman stuck me in less than 30-sec once). Frank was a formidable foe. I beat him but he injured my ribs in the process. No matter to me...I didn't have to face Wallman. We weighed in and guess what? Miller's 145 pounder was sick and the Smoke went up a weight class since he could handle me at 138 pretty easy. Now, I'm facing a 'fat and sassy' Smoky Wallman and I'm all taped up and can hardly breathe. I had my best match of my career and the Smoke finally stuck me towards the end of the third period...he was sporting a 15 consecutive pin streak. I was down 22-2 when he put me away. My teammates were psyched because I just about broke his pin streak. I should have stayed at 138 and let Frank take the beating instead of me. We taped my left shoulder instead of my right rib cage as a diversionary tactic. Smoke would work an injury. I practiced all week countering anything he threw at my 'fake wounded' side. I think I caught a glimpse of Frank on the sidelines with a look on his face like, "Sheesh! Better Mitchell, than me!" --just befor the ref hit the mat..and barked those forgiving words. Pin! ha ha

Wasn't Suzanne Hickman that lovely gal who came from Texas our Junior or Senior year, with the wonderful southern accent? I remember she hung proudly on to it. I however had it laughed out of me during our ninth grade year. Kids would ask me to say a word, when I did, they'd laughed. Didn't like to feel different. The y'all took two years to loose however.

Eileen Frasier was a great gal. I remember sitting at a basketball game our junior year and trying on her new glasses. I could see BOTH scoreboards, always thought you just saw the one you sat closest to. Same with seeing faces on the opposing bleachers. You are suppose to see them too??Led me to a trip to Arno Illig's dad's practice and bingo, glasses for my senior year. UCK. I went to contacts by college now have LASIK. I never did like glasses but always liked Eileen. Speaking of the Illigs....
Arno Illig use to drive Mrs. Iversen, our German teacher nuts. He of course spoke German as his FIRST language but that didn't stop Mrs. I. from kicking him out of class for bad pronunciation, wrong sentence order etc. that the Swedish teacher was bound to impose on him. He was a stubborn kid, another endearing trait of those of us with German heritage. I can't remember how many times he got kicked out of her class. Don't even know if he even passed it. What a rip off that was. I knew to say the words one way for Mrs. I. and go home and say them the OTHER way for my dad who had fits over her accent and speaking.Needless to say my dad's first language was German too.
Editor's note: I've had that problem with one turning into two--like your scoreboard anecdote. But, mine was usually because of too much wine. I'd shut one eye so the two lines in the middle of the road would turn into one. I once drove from Puyallup, WA to Pierre with one eye shut all the way. ha ha
Mrs. Iversen, the German teacher. Rick Turner was recalling an incident where he threw an apple at her '53 Chev, 2-door sedan, during lunch hour. Rick has an uncanny long-term memory and described the car down to the type of hubcaps. The next weekend I was in Pierre, and decided to take a chance and call Dudley Iversen, because I knew they always kept old cars and collectables. Sure enough, they had the black '53 Chev and even took me to the storage area where they kept all these old cars. I took the pic and sent it back to Rick. He couldn't believe we stitched that email conversation together with the real metal and glass in a week's time.
Arno is in Richmond, WA doing real estate. I just got on a search engine and typed in his name--and found him. I phoned him and had a nice conversation. This was a couple of months ago. His dad thought he was turning into a juvinile delinquent so between his Soph and Junior year pappa Illig sent Arno to Canton, SD to a Lutheran Academy High School. Cathleen Ducey knew some of the same people Arno ran around with at Black Hills State after high school. Unfortunately, Arno hasn't returned any of my emails since that conversation. blog meister

Janet Gage was a real kick. She had the most unusual pets anyone a Riggs could have imagined. She lived out at Farm Island since her Dad was the head park ranger there. Among her "pets" were Bambi an orphaned deer, George a great blue heron that perched every year on the chimney where a nest was built and Bandit a raccoon, just to name a few. We were in the Water Ski Club together. Because of her great swimming and athleticism, she would stand on the top of five people pyramids while water skiing. She talked me into it once. I was successful but too scared to do it in the shows. Her brother was an awesome skier and even kite skied. He died when we were in high school from a kite accident. I was there when the rope broke from the boat. It was awful. On a happier note,Janet and I won first prize in the science fair (state wide even) for our dissected shark. Darn, that thing reeked by state. Even with the formaldehyde. ( But at least Mr. Robinson was proud.)Janet cruised the streets in a cherry turquoise convertible mustang our senior year. Awesome grad gift. I think she is still in Pierre or the environs. She use to life guard at the city pool. I always wanted a bod like hers. Another darn. Hope a local can track her down and get her to come.
Editor's note: Jerry Brink recalled the same account of Janet and her water skiing. I didn't know Sandy was in on that deal, too. I guess I vaguely remember the water skiing shows. I distinctly remember her lifeguarding and bod. Who else lifeguarded down at City...Glenda Caldwell, Linda Widdoss, Patty Keys...who else? OK, you Pierreites---you see Sandy's challenge. #178 Carol McIlvery. Believe she is still in Pierre and hope she comes to the reunion. Haven't seen here in awhile. Our parents use to play cards together many moons ago. Carol's mom was a real neat lady and I believe at one time was a 4H leader to many. She was a very neat lady.Carol's cousin was very close to winning an Olympic Gold. Think he went to the Olympics twice. Also, can't jog my memory enough but there is some story with Carol, I and Jim Brooks, can't remember who else but something about her car--maybe Jim can jog my memory.

#151 Russ Reed sorry gang, think I struck out. Not to much to report about Russ. Remember a pleasant kid, mom taught a little, Dad farmed out east,Hayes maybe. No Russ Reeds in Pierre, two in Oklahoma, nothing there. I "ain't" even going to try to contact all the Russel Reeds in Texas. Reason for the mid-south was that I thought I remembered a southern twang there someplace.
**Editor's Note: Russell always had that look on his face like he just put a thumbtack on the teachers chair knowing there would be a bunch of us blamed for it before it ever boiled down to him. He did have sort of a non-SD accent, didn't he? How do you remember this stuff. I know I sound like Butch Cassidy when he said, "Who are those guys?" but you remember some of the strangest things. Are all fishermen like that?

I'm not gunna publish it but there's an Eldon Peterson in Pierre. S'pose somebody can stop by and tell him that we miss him?
Editor's Note: OK, one of your Pierre people....pick up the phone and call Eldon. I mean it! Everybody who lives in the Pierre area should be touched by someone on the Committee....seriously.

Faye Miller's mom baby sitting hmmm, let's see lady by the name of Freda Taylor used to do that task for me. One day I stopped off at the local mud puddle (boys will be boys) to practice some of the latest dance steps. Not withstanding the fact that I was late, my shoes had changed color and my socks were wet, also. Well, Freda and Ed, not ever having had kids, Freda decides to use her imagination as to how to fix the situation. Freda rummages around in Ed's closet and comes out with an old pair of his pants. Of course they weren't going to fit. A cut off piece of clothes line rope served for a belt. Here's another problem, Ed is almost six feet tall. She finally got done rolling and safety pinning them so they'd stay up, I could barely get my legs together to walk. OK, next came the sox, Ed's were completely out of the question. Next came her drawer, no white sox, lots of nylons tho. Out came the scissors, snip, a couple of rubber bands to hold them up and walla, done. By then my shoes had somewhat dried and it was time for me to go home, shoes on went truckin out past Mitchell's house, down the side walk and home. When I got there both parents had seen me coming and were waiting outside for me. Remember when you could tell when something was bugging your folks.I figured I'd had it. Mom had tears in her eyes trying to keep from laughing, dad wouldn't even look at me. Not a word. Went in and changed. I can see it all now. sorry, had to get that one out.
**Editor's Note: Freda and Ed Taylor were cool people. Jerry is dead on when he describes them. they didn't have any kids of their own but actually had about 50 of us kids at one time, or another. Freda and Ed lived through the back yard from me. Dave Lindekugle lives in their house today, on Harney Court. Ed Taylor was a bicycle wizard. You East Pierre people have to understand--us Housing Area kids only had a support system that was built in to the Housing Area itself. Ed taught me how to take a link out of the chain on a bike. He also taught me how to patch a tire...probably about the same time as Freda was dressing Jerry up like Tom Sawyer. I can tell you one thing for sure--if we'd have seen Jerry in that get-up we'd have razzed him to no end. So, my guess is that he snuck home, through the backyards. We robbed Freda's plum tree one night for ammo in a 'sleep out' war. Again, I got caught and didn't rat on my accomplises. I had to buy Freda Taylor a jar of plum jelly every Saturday for an entire summer. I remember shopping stores for the best buys. The average was about 25-cents a jar which was half of my allowance. It wasn't until years later that I found out that Freda would bring the jelly back to our house, since she didn't like plum jelly in the first place. That was called "Prairie Justice". Ironically, to this day, when I'm grocery shopping, and I'm in the jam and jelly department, I think about Freda. That same jar of Smucker's runs about $2.75 by today's standards. And, I can do just about anything with a bicycle, thanks to Ed. You can ask Dave L.--that plum tree is still in his back yard. I figure I own it! Freda and Ed Taylor left tracks that many of have followed all our lives. Exceptional people. They would literally give you the shirt off their back---and the nylons out of their drawer...they did for Jerry.

Correction on #182 Marie Novak. She is now working at the NEW SUPER WALMART. Correct on that Jerry, watch what you say--they could be related somehow.

sheesh with Sal around, you don't dare badmouth anybody. they might be her 14th cousin on her mother's side, twice removed
**Editor's Note: Ditto that. But since we only say nice things about each other Sally should continue to give us these nifty pieces of info about our classamtes.

#164-okay, stand back I got this one. Hey guys, we really messed up here. Nancy Hanson. I was just getting to know this gal and then it was too late,we were gone. What a sweetie. She had a quiet personality with that "don't look at me cuz of my braces" smile. Really bugged her, wore her retainer the sr yr. She loosened up after she found out that you really didn't care. Funny is being modest. She wore those long full dresses, a little pidgeon-toed, and get this-moccasins. Dark long hair, not quite as tall as her pal Shirley Tilber, but taller than Gail, her other running mate. If I were to start tracking her, a phone call to Gail in Texas would be the place to start.
***Editor's Note: I think Nancy Hanson was on my 'find' list and I ran into a cold trail in Hermosa, SD. I might be wrong but I think we're talking about the same person. blog man

#182 Marie Novak She is still in Pierre and employed by the Women's Correctional Facility in Pierre. My nehpew is married to one of her daughters and another nephew is married to the other daughter. So I have seen her at some of our family gatherings. She is married to Roger Lovell.
Sally, you have relatives everywhere. Where do you have your 'family gatherings', at the Civic Center? Better yet, how do you keep track of them all? Thanks for the info on Marie. You have to know more. Keep it coming. You're a great contributor. blog man

#149 DelRay Pool -- I called him since he lives in Sioux Falls and told him about the 40th reunion. Had a nice visit with him,but didn't sound like he would be coming. Said he is retired, but does some remodeling things, have heard that he is pretty good at that craft. Believe he also said he has some apartments here in SF.
I am sure their are a few others that know more about him than I.
Jerry, keep up the good memory. Your doing great.
**So, Sally, are you getting weak on us here? Call DelRay up and remind him that it ain't that far from Soo Foo to Pierre. He could pull in on Saturday and leave on Sunday. blog man

Okay jer i've been away for a while and in catching up I WOULD
pay money to hear the story Penne says she can tell on me.I know I didn't do anything that bad, on second thought awe let's just forget it. Your guy's memories for detail absolutely amaze me after 40 years. I really get a charge out of reading your stories.
**Don't worry, Gaylord--I think they are blowing smoke. They've tried to extort me, too. The deal is that I've got enough on all of them that IF they did have a story or two on us, we can use my info for barter. Sort of a trade off. Besides, what ever it is that we did---we've survived. About the memory detail--that blows me away, too. And, I thought I was good. I enjoy reading this stuff, too. Sally, Penne and Jerry are in a time warp and able to recall this stuff like it happened yesterday...the rest of us are sane!

#168 Barb Hodgins maybe I'm playing a little favoritism here, but since Barb and I were neighbors, I think this gal is pretty special. Trouble is, I never learned to appreciate her till one nite last summer, forget that thought if you don't mind. I was here fishing again and Dave L. brought Barb and her hubby George out to visit me at campground #2. It was a real ugly nite so the four of us"adults" crammed ourselves into my little camper. After several tastings of Daves famous corn elixer and various other snakebite remedys of mine, I think I found out that Barb and hubby George are in Pierre.Geo, a super nice guy(likes to fish) pulls wrenches for Beck Mtrs. Barb is involved with something like Goodwill. They have a place above the dam. If you wish to pursue this, Dave has all the inside stuff and how to contact her.

Ron Beckwith-another of the famous Hayes gang. Ron,not tall, not fat, not small, just right. Pretty average student way above average guy. Quiet kid, very quiet, until he gets to know you and if he likes you, you're toast. Very sharp quick mind. Seemed to embarrass him to laugh, great blush. Loved to rip on Vanderpol. Undeserved, of course. Wonder if he still wears those pointed-toed boots?

Artie was driving dads new Ford pickup and we were hot on the trail.OH SH-- who put that washout there? Ken was not really too pleased with his young son.

#146, Ron Huber. Anne Huber was the Mrs. Brooks, at Rydell High, of Riggs High School (Grease). Being her son had to be pretty tough duty from the get go. If I was ever going to copy someone's test paper it would have been Ron's--one of the most intelligent gents I've ever met. RIP

#147, Jocke Oleson. Someone told me Jocke was either a tenured Professor of Psychology or the Head of the Psych. Department, at Brigham Young University. I know he is a Mormon and having grown up at Riggs High School, it doesn't surprise me he pursued a career in Psychology...after all, hanging around with all of us, gave him a great headstart regarding physchotic behavior!
